For many of us photography is all about family and friends and while everyone has a camera these days there can still be a world of difference between the impromptu pictures you take yourself and the pictures a professional photographer takes. Often it is down to the different social dynamic involved in gathering everyone together for the photographer which makes everyone take it that bit more seriously than if it was just mum with her camera. Whatever the case, in years to come you will be pleased you took the effort to get some good pictures taken.

Instead of a posed family group you may prefer a less formal photoshoot, especially but not only f there are young children involved. For children, even more than adults, familiar surroundings can make a big difference so shoots at home or in a favourite place, like the local play park or where they go to feed the ducks will often be much less fraught and the resulting pictures much more natural. I can concentrate on taking pictures while you and your children play much as you would without a photographer being there. Equally, for a couple, taking some informal images of the two of you at home can be a way to get some different portraits.
Perhaps only if a particular image is required there can also be a few posed shots taken, although with children (and animals!), it can still take some gentle coaxing and persuasion to get them to go precisely where you want them and do exactly what you had in mind!

Another time to take photographs is at those landmark moments in our lives. While we are all used to taking pictures to mark significant birthdays, either at the birthday party itself or at a specifically arranged photoshoot, there is another rite-of-passage moment that is strongly associated with a photographic portrait session on the other side of the Atlantic - the Senior Portrait. In the United States, Senior Year is the final year of High School and everyone makes a big deal of it, marking the end of school and the beginning of the next phase of life. Amongst the parties and the yearbooks many people arrange a portrait session to mark the transition. The portraits are all about the teenager starting to develop their adult identity, about being seen as an adult in their own right, rather than a child of their parents. While here in Scotland we may not have the full 'Senior Year' industry that is no reason not to copy the idea of a Senior photoshoot!
