COVID-19 Update
Personal tuition is likely to be affected by the Scottish Government's COVID-19 restrictions for some time to come. However a combination of online discussion and a bit of socially distanced instruction can provide much of the same instruction as I might previously have offered in a face-to-face session, In practise tuition sessions might need to be a bit more tailored to your precise needs and consist of a mix of online and outdoor sessions.

Everyone has a camera these days, even if it's just the one built into your phone. However there can be a world of difference between the image you think you have taken and the one you actually share with friends and family online. Sometimes it's because we are really busy with something else and the photography is only an afterthought. On those sorts of occasions it probably is better to hire a professional to concentrate on taking pictures while you organise the conference, direct the play or cater the birthday party!
However there are lots of other times when you want to take better photographs. We've all been there when we think, 'that would make a great picture', only to be disappointed with the result when we look back on it. Any photograph is a product of the equipment used to take and display it - the technology - and the decisions the photographer makes before and after they press the shutter - the art. Learning to take a better picture is all about tackling these two fundamental aspects of photography.
Of course there are lots of resources out there to help you with these two key things, online or in books. Only, sometimes it can feel there is just too much help and it is easy to get lost amongst it all. Which is when you could benefit from a bit of one-to-one tuition. Perhaps you've got a new camera and can't get to grips with the different settings, however closely you read the manual. Or you'd just like to improve the quality of the pictures you share on Facebook. Whatever your requirements a few hours of practical tuition can make a big difference.
My tuition sessions usually take place in Edinburgh and will be your own completely personal programme. If you want to know what these f-stops you've heard mention of are all about we can discuss that in detail. Or maybe you just want a few quick tips so you can take some better portraits of your friends. Whatever you want to learn about, we can start with a chat, maybe in a cafe, and work out exactly what to concentrate on before heading out with your camera to take some pictures for a couple of hours. We'll then find somewhere to sit down and look at some of the pictures you've taken and I'll give you a few pointers on where to go next in developing your skills.
